German defender Josh Quarshie has joined SK Sturm Graz on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old moves from Premier League side Southampton to the Austrian Bundesliga, as reported by the BBC on Tuesday.
Quarshie signed for Southampton from 1899 Hoffenheim in May 2025 on a four-year deal. Last season, he made 18 appearances under head coach Tonda Eckert, making his debut in a 2-1 win against Wrexham. However, he hasn't featured for the Saints since March 2026. Southampton wished the player well for the remainder of the campaign in a statement and said they would be monitoring his progress.
What role will Quarshie play at Sturm Graz?
Sturm Graz are acquiring a young, physically strong defender to bolster their centre-back options. The club currently sits fourth in the Bundesliga table with eight points from five games, having scored six goals and conceded five this season. Under manager Christian Ilzer, the team's recent form reads LDWWD, showing solidity but leaving them four points behind leaders Rapid Vienna. Quarshie's arrival could add stability to the back line, especially with attacker Otar Kiteishvili currently sidelined. You can view the full squad details on our squad page.
Why did Quarshie leave Southampton?
The departure of the German U21 international stems from his lack of prospects in Tonda Eckert's side. After his move from Hoffenheim just over a year ago, Quarshie failed to secure a regular starting spot. His 18 appearances were spread across the season, and a breakthrough never materialised. His last outing for Southampton was in March 2026. The club therefore opted to loan him out for playing time rather than continue with limited involvement. Southampton, however, retains a close eye on his development in Austria.
What does the rest of the season look like for Sturm?
The next challenge for Sturm Graz comes on 13 September 2026 with a home match against second-placed LASK Linz. This fixture is significant for their standing in a tight title race. The current table outlines the situation:
| Position | Team | Points | Goal Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rapid Vienna | 12 | +7 |
| 2 | LASK Linz | 10 | +5 |
| 3 | RB Salzburg | 9 | +4 |
| 4 | Sturm Graz | 8 | +1 |
A win against LASK could push Sturm Graz closer to the top group. The complete schedule is available on our fixtures page. Signing Quarshie highlights Graz's ambition to compete at the top this season and to shore up their defence for the tasks ahead.
What does the transfer mean for the defence?
With the injury to attacking player Otar Kiteishvili, the team is currently slightly weakened in attack. The defence, however, gains a new option with Quarshie. His profile as a physical, young centre-back fits Sturm Graz's playing style. He is expected to compete for a place in the starting lineup. His move comes at a time when the team needs to consolidate its form to keep pace with the league leaders. The current league standing and further stats can be found on the standings page. For Josh Quarshie, a new chapter now begins in Graz where he can prove himself as a Bundesliga player.
