Sunday's Bundesliga match between Rapid Vienna and Sturm Graz was overshadowed by major technical problems with broadcaster Sky and a complete failure of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. Just three minutes into the game, when Rapid were awarded a penalty, the full extent of the issues became apparent.
Sky, which has broadcast the Austrian Bundesliga since 2004 and holds the rights from 2026 to 2030, faced hundreds of complaints on social media. Customers reported unstable camera work, declining image quality, sound outages, and delayed commentator audio during the match. The broadcaster later apologized to its community for the disruption during the live transmission of the Admiral Bundesliga.
The reasons for the poor broadcast quality are structural. The Bundesliga no longer has Sky produce the TV pictures itself, having reassigned the production rights. The new partner is Uppercut Broadcast, a deal that was presented back in December of last year. Sky now pays significantly less for the broadcasting rights and must take over and broadcast the finished images from Uppercut. Subsequently, Sky terminated its rented studio in Wien-Auhof. Uppercut CEO Daniel Brandstätter had promised in December to set new standards in domestic TV production from the upcoming season.
During the match, there were not only picture and sound issues but also a critical failure of the VAR system. Sturm Graz coach Fabio Ingolitsch stated after the game: "Noch vor dem Spiel seien die Unparteiischen zu ihm gekommen und hätten gesagt, dass sie 'keine direkte Verbindung zum VAR' hätten." As a result, VAR official Harald Lechner and fourth official Julian Weinberger had to communicate via phone for the entire 90 minutes. The VAR check for the penalty that led to the 1-0 goal consequently lasted four full minutes.
Despite the unusual circumstances, Sturm Graz lost the match and now looks at a mixed record in the current campaign. The club sits in 4th place in the Bundesliga table with 8 points from 5 games. Their record shows 2 wins, 2 draws, and one loss, with recent form reading LDWWD. In attack, the team has scored 6 goals so far but has also conceded 5, resulting in a positive goal difference of +1. In the title race, Sturm already trails leaders Lask Linz by 7 points. The next opportunity to close the gap comes immediately in their next fixture. Sturm hosts Lask Linz at the Merkur Arena on September 13, 2026.
The technical failures at Sky and the VAR outage raise questions about the reliability of the Bundesliga's infrastructure. For Sturm Graz, the focus now shifts entirely to the top-of-the-table clash against the league leaders, with preparation to be followed in our squad section.
